Corrugated Paper Package Industry Chain
Corrugated paperboard is a type of paperboard consisting of a medium fluted corrugated kraft paper and two flat linerboards. It is produced on the flute lamination machines, which is called corrugators. It is widely used for making the corrugated shipping cartons, boxes, mailing boxes, mailers, cardboard boxes, diecut boxes. The medium fluted paper and the linerpaper are made of the kraft paper. Corrugated paperboard is sometimes refered to as corrugated cardboard, fiberboard, even though cardboard refers to any heavy paper-pulp based board.
Supply and Demand Status
Corrugated paperboard is one of the largest paper output in all China paper types. It is widely used to make the corrugated mailer boxes, shipping cartons and retail purpose corrugated printed boxes. After 2016, due to the slowdown in domestic demand and the promulgation of waste paper import bans, China’s corrugated paper production has shown an overall downward trend. In 2020, China’s corrugated paper production was 31.708 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 7.31% from 34.210 million tons in 2019.
In 2019, the top 5 regions of China’s corrugated paper production are Guangdong, Henan, Zhejiang, Fujian, and Jiangsu, with output of 5.084 million tons, 3.476 million tons, 3.274 million tons, 2.703 million tons, and 2.463 million tons, respectively, accounting for the proportion of total national output respectively. 14.86%, 10.16%, 9.57%, 7.9%, 7.2%.
In 2019, China’s apparent demand for corrugated paper was 34.203 million tons. In 2020, China’s apparent demand for corrugated paper was 31.756 million tons, a decrease of 2.447 million tons from 2019, a year-on-year decrease of 7.16%.
The market price of corrugated paper in China was relatively stable from 2013 to 2016. After the second half of 2016, the price fluctuated greatly. It returned to stability in 2020. The price rised again at the beginning of 2021. As of December 30, 2020, the market price of corrugated paper in China was 3756.2 RMB per ton.
Import and Export Trade
Since the implementation of the zero import of foreign waste paper law, some large-scale paper mills have successively put into operation overseas construction facilities and the shortage of domestic raw material supplies, resulting in a substantial increase in the import volume of corrugated paper, while the overall export volume has shown a downward trend. In 2020, China’s corrugated paper export volume was 24,900 tons, which is higher than that. In 2019, there was an increase of 27,000 tons; the number of imports was 72,800 tons, an increase of 57,400 tons compared with 2019.
In 2019, China’s corrugated paper export value was 46,644,000 US dollars, and the import value was 9,918,900 US dollars; in 2020, China’s corrugated paper export value was 68,903,500 US dollars, and the import value was 26,998,800 US dollars.
China mainly imports corrugated paper from Vietnam. In 2020, China imported 31,200 tons of corrugated paper from Vietnam, accounting for 42.81% of the country’s total imports; the import value was 10.4966 million US dollars, accounting for 38.88% of the total import value. In 2020, China imported 8,500 tons of corrugated paper from Belgium, with an import value of 2.5588 million US dollars.
